Earn $21.50 as a Field Operator

  • Start at $18.45/hour with multiple raises during the program.

  • Graduate as an ADEM certified operator when complete.

Program Includes

  • Classroom Training through Coastal Community College’s Skills for Success courses, covering excavation, skid steer operation, and bulldozer operation.

  • In-House Preparation for key certifications with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) in Water Grade I and Wastewater IC.

  • Additional Certifications - You’ll learn and test for your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), CPR, and First Aid.

  • Safety Training on critical areas like trenching and shoring and confined spaces safety.

  • An overview of public underground utility operations, including work orders, CAD mapping, and SCADA systems.​

  • Spots are limited and based on NBU’s staffing needs at the time, so don’t miss out on this exclusive opportunity.

  • Participation in on-call schedule with PTO benefits after training.

  • Overtime compensation starting at 8 hours per day instead of 40 hours per week.

Qualifications & Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Valid driver's license or commitment to obtaining one.

Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Strong interest in learning and developing skills in underground utility work.

  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

Learning and Training:

  • Assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining underground natural gas, sewer, and water distribution systems under experienced guidance.

  • Participate in on-the-job training, developing skills in excavation, safety protocols, and equipment operation.

Assistance in Inspections:

  • Support routine inspections of underground utility systems, learning to identify and address potential issues.

  • Follow safety and regulatory guidelines under supervision during inspections.

Assisting with Repairs and Troubleshooting:

  • Respond to service calls and emergencies alongside experienced technicians to assist in addressing leaks, blockages, and other issues in the utility systems.

  • Learn to diagnose and troubleshoot problems related to natural gas, sewer, and water distribution.

Safety Awareness:

  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines under the supervision of experienced professionals.

  • Use appropriate safety equipment and learn industry best practices.

Documentation Support:

  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of work performed, including installation, repairs, and inspections.

  • Learn to complete necessary paperwork and reports in compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
