Natural Gas Leak Detection Survey Starts July 14

Beginning July 14, NBU will begin our annual Natural Gas Leak Detection Survey as part of routine operations to help ensure the safety and reliability of our system.

These surveys are required under federal and state regulations and follow best practices for public and customer safety. The goal is to proactively identify and address potential leaks across our natural gas system.

Survey activities include:

  • Mobile / Walking Inspections

  • Public Building Inspections

  • Up Rate Surveys

  • Monitoring / Recheck Surveys

  • Odor Complaint Response

  • Meter Protection Surveys

If we detect a hazardous leak, we respond immediately to eliminate the danger. Non-hazardous leaks are carefully tracked and scheduled for repair.

Help Us Keep the Community Safe

While regular surveying is essential, we also rely on the public to report anything suspicious.

Natural gas leaks can often be detected by:

  • Smell – A strong odor like rotten eggs

  • Sound – A hissing or whistling noise near a gas line

  • Sight – Dirt blowing or bubbling water without a clear cause

If you suspect a gas leak, call us immediately:📞 251.580.1626 (Mon–Fri, 8am–4:30pm)📞 251.580.2559 (After Hours)There is no charge for leak investigations.

Leaks most commonly occur when underground gas lines are accidentally damaged during construction or digging. That’s why it’s critical to call 811 before you dig—it’s free, easy, and helps prevent accidents.

Important Reminder: All surveyors will be NBU employees in clearly marked NBU vehicles. If you ever see suspicious activity or have questions, please call us using the numbers above.

We appreciate your cooperation as we complete this important work. For more information, visit our website and learn more about: Find out more about How to Detect a Gas Leak and the Call 811 Before You Dig Program.
