Natural Gas Leak Detection Survey

Beginning August 3, 2026, NBU will begin our annual Natural Gas Leak Detection Survey as part of our routine operations to ensure the continued safety and reliability of our natural gas system.

These surveys are required under federal and state regulations and follow industry best practices that help protect both the public and our customers. Our goal is to proactively identify and address potential leaks across our natural gas network before they become hazardous.

Survey activities will include:

• Mobile / Walking Inspections

• Public Building Inspections

• Up Rate Surveys

• Monitoring / Recheck Surveys

• Odor Complaint Response

• Meter Protection Surveys

If a hazardous leak is detected, our crews respond immediately to eliminate the danger. Non‑hazardous leaks are documented and scheduled for repair according to safety guidelines.

Help Us Keep the Community Safe

While routine surveying is essential, we also rely on the public to report anything unusual.

Natural gas leaks can often be detected by:

• Smell – A strong odor similar to rotten eggs

• Sound – Hissing or whistling near a gas line

• Sight – Dirt blowing or water bubbling for no clear reason

There is no charge for leak investigations.

Most leaks occur when underground lines are accidentally damaged during construction or digging. That’s why it’s critical to Call 811 Before You Dig—it’s free, easy, and prevents accidents.
