NBU Encourages Patience Amid Infrastructure Expansion

North Baldwin Utilities (NBU) is seeing an increase in underground utility line breaks across its service area as Baldwin County experiences historic growth and infrastructure expansion.
The construction of the new Novelis aluminum manufacturing facility in Bay Minette — a multi-billion-dollar investment expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs — has accelerated residential, commercial and infrastructure development throughout North Baldwin County. New neighborhoods, retail spaces, restaurants and hotels are underway to support this growth.
At the same time, multiple telecommunications providers are expanding high-speed fiber broadband networks across the area, including Mediacom Communications, Point Broadband and Brightspeed. These projects will bring faster and more reliable internet service to homes, schools, healthcare facilities and businesses — improving access to things like telemedicine, online education and digital commerce.
However, with increased excavation activity comes a higher risk of accidental damage to underground utilities. Many recent service interruptions have been caused by third-party telecommunications contractors performing fiber installations. These contractors are not affiliated with NBU or other local underground utility providers.
“Growth is exciting, and expanded broadband access is a tremendous long-term benefit for our community,” said Jason Padgett, CEO of North Baldwin Utilities. “But it does require patience as multiple contractors work throughout our area. Many of these crews are not from our region and are working long hours in unfamiliar conditions. We appreciate the public’s understanding as everyone works to support Baldwin County’s future.”
NBU reminds residents and contractors to always contact Alabama 811 at least 48 hours before beginning any digging project. Calling 811 is free and allows utility providers to mark underground lines to prevent damage, outages, injuries and costly repairs.
In addition to private broadband expansion, the Alabama Fiber Network (AFN) is strengthening broadband backbone infrastructure across the state. This middle-mile system supports local providers and positions communities like Bay Minette for long-term economic growth. Read more about AFN at www.alabamafibernetwork.com.
